The Ultra-Scientific Placebo-Based Taste Matcher

The Ultra-Scientific Placebo-Based Taste Matcher

So one day, a nice boy emailed me and asked if I could recommend any music to him, because it can be hard to judge whether you'll like a band just by their lyrics. One of the clues he gave me was "I like Placebo," which I didn't find that immediately helpful, because everyone likes Placebo.

But after thinking about it, I realized that everyone likes Placebo for different reasons, which isn't something that the robot-run sites like AllMusic and LastFM acknowledge. Hopefully this quiz will help determine what it is you like about Placebo and lead you to bands that are similar to them in that specific way. (However, if you're over like, 21, I can't promise that the recs are going to be anything new to you.)

We'll start out easy: which album is your favorite?
Placebo
Without You I'm Nothing
Black Market Music
Sleeping With Ghosts

Yeah, and Meds. What do you think of it, really?
I appreciate the return to more guitar-based songs; I think that's what they're best at.
Dark and dirty--just how I like my Placebo!
It's the album that made me love them.
Holy CRAP talk about overproduced! Did they go in there with a Dustbuster and suck all the grit out?

Choose a lyric:
She wears her tears on her blouse / confused and racked with self-doubt
Just like I swallowed half my stash / I never ever wanna crash
Carve your name into my arm / instead of stressed I lie here charmed
I'll go fighting nail and teeth / you've never seen such perserverance

And the band's most epic moment:
Snogging onstage in Lithuania
"Without You I'm Nothing" with David Bowie
Velvet Goldmine
I don't care what the haters say; the layers of guitar in "Pure Morning" are epic enough for me

I say: Placebo guitar. You say:
They're all girls. Except the pink one. He's gay!
How sweet is "Post Blue?" It is pretty sweet.
No one's ever recorded it as well as [insert Placebo producer of your choice]
I want to stick Stefan Olsdal's big white Fender in my mouth. (That's not a euphemism.)

You'd describe Placebo as...
An international band
A European band
A British band
Adorable

Which queer Placebo song is your favorite?
"Nancy Boy"
"Broken Promise"
"Burger Queen"
"My Sweet Prince"

What disappoints you the most?
Sleeping With Ghosts
The departure of Steve Hewitt
Filler songs
Brian Molko, bald and dressed like a man

Girls at the mic! Pick a band:
Portishead
Sleater-Kinney
Rasputina
I'm not very familiar with any of these bands / dudes only, please

Of these choices, what's your favorite David Bowie album?
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Aladdin Sane
Earthling
I have favorite Bowie songs, but not a favorite Bowie album

Of the artists Placebo have covered, who's your favorite?
The Smiths
T. Rex
Serge Gainsbourg
Kate Bush

How about the musicians Placebo have worked with? Which do you listen to the most?
She Wants Revenge
The Kills
REM
Trash Palace

Think about your favorite bands. Now, be honest with yourself. Do you gravitate towards...
Melodic voices
Distinctive voices
I'm more interested in the music than the vocalist
Crap, I just don't know

Okay, I'm sure you are a unique, special snowflake who cannot be put into a neat little box, but imagine you just had a short conversation with an average, non-indie person your age. How do you think they would describe you behind your back? (Be brutal!)
Goth
Emo
Punk
Pretentious

Finish the sentence: When I hear a new song...
I decide whether I like it or not after one listen. Life is short.
I'll give it a few listens, but my patience really depends on the band in question.
I need something to catch my attention immediately--a great line or awesome riff.
If I like it, I listen to it a dozen times; if I don't like it, I listen to it a dozen times to figure out why.

I want to listen to bands who are like Placebo in that they are...
Crunchy and guitar-driven
Thoughtful--sometimes their songs require more than one listen to make sense
Similarly dark and decadent
Unapologetically bent
